It is also used in patients with heart valve disease (eg, rheumatic fever) or prosthetic (artificial) heart valves who are allergic to penicillin. When first approved by the FDA in the 1950’s, vancomycin was less pure than it is today 1, resulting in a higher risk of side effects.
